FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENTS
FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENTS
Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Assessments for Children, Adolescents and Adults
At The Therapy Room NQ, our experienced Occupational Therapists provide comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) for children, adolescents and adults across Townsville and North Queensland.
A Functional Capacity Assessment provides a detailed understanding of an individual’s abilities, challenges and support needs across everyday activities.
Our assessments take a person-centred, evidence-informed approach, considering not only what an individual can do independently, but also the assistance, equipment, strategies and environmental supports they may require to participate safely and meaningfully in everyday life.
Whether you are preparing for an NDIS plan reassessment, seeking a clearer understanding of your functional abilities or exploring future support requirements, our team can help.
What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive assessment that evaluates how an individual’s disability, health condition or functional limitations affect their ability to participate in everyday activities.
Conducted by a qualified Occupational Therapist, an FCA considers a person’s strengths, abilities, challenges and the supports they require in different environments.
The assessment may involve clinical observations, interviews, standardised assessment tools and consultation with family members, carers, support workers or other treating professionals where appropriate.
The information collected is used to develop a detailed report outlining functional abilities, support needs and recommendations.
What Does a Functional Capacity Assessment Look At?
Our Occupational Therapists assess a range of functional areas depending on each individual’s circumstances, needs and goals.
Self-Care & Personal Activities
Assessing independence with everyday personal care tasks, including showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating and personal hygiene.
Mobility & Physical Function
Exploring an individual’s ability to move safely and independently within their home and community, including transfers, mobility, coordination and the use of mobility equipment.
Communication
Considering how an individual communicates their needs, understands information and interacts with others during everyday activities.
Social Interaction & Community Participation
Assessing participation in social relationships, recreational activities and community environments, including any barriers that may affect meaningful engagement.
Learning & Cognitive Function
Exploring memory, attention, problem-solving, planning, organisation, decision-making and the ability to learn or apply new skills.
Self-Management & Daily Responsibilities
Assessing an individual’s ability to manage daily routines, appointments, household responsibilities, personal safety and other activities required for independent living.
Domestic & Household Activities
Considering independence with meal preparation, cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping and maintaining a safe and functional home environment.
Sensory Processing & Emotional Regulation
Where relevant, exploring how sensory processing differences and emotional regulation challenges affect daily functioning, participation and independence.
Who May Benefit From a Functional Capacity Assessment?
Functional Capacity Assessments may be helpful for:
Children and adolescents with developmental disabilities or functional challenges
Adults living with physical, intellectual, neurological or psychosocial disabilities
NDIS participants preparing for a plan reassessment
Individuals experiencing changes in their functional abilities
Participants seeking evidence to help clarify their support needs
Individuals exploring increased independence or alternative living arrangements
Families, carers and support coordinators seeking a comprehensive understanding of functional abilities and support requirements
Each assessment is tailored to the individual’s needs, age, circumstances and reason for referral.
Functional Capacity Assessments for NDIS Participants
Functional Capacity Assessments can provide valuable evidence about the impact of a participant’s disability on their everyday life.
An FCA report may assist with:
Providing evidence for NDIS planning or plan reassessments
Identifying current functional abilities and limitations
Describing the level and frequency of assistance required with daily activities
Identifying needs for therapy, assistive technology or environmental modifications
Exploring support requirements for greater independence
Informing recommendations for future capacity-building and disability-related supports
Supporting informed conversations with NDIS planners and support coordinators
Our Occupational Therapists aim to provide clear, detailed and evidence-based recommendations that reflect the participant’s individual needs and goals.
Please note: An FCA report provides clinical evidence and recommendations. All NDIS access, funding and support decisions remain the responsibility of the NDIA.
What Is Involved in a Functional Capacity Assessment?
We understand that undergoing an assessment can feel overwhelming, particularly when it involves discussing personal challenges and support needs.
Our Occupational Therapists aim to make the process comfortable, collaborative and tailored to each individual’s needs.
Step 1 — Initial Consultation & Information Gathering
We begin by understanding the reason for the assessment, the individual’s goals, relevant medical and developmental history, current supports and everyday challenges.
Where appropriate, we may also seek information from family members, carers, support coordinators or other treating professionals, with consent.
Step 2 — Functional Assessment
Our Occupational Therapist completes relevant assessments to understand how the individual manages everyday activities.
This may include interviews, clinical observations, functional tasks and standardised assessment tools.
Depending on the assessment requirements, appointments may take place in our Townsville clinic, at home or within other relevant environments.
Step 3 — Assessment Analysis & Recommendations
Following the assessment, our Occupational Therapist reviews the information gathered, identifies functional strengths and challenges, and considers appropriate support recommendations.
Recommendations are developed with reference to the individual’s circumstances, goals and assessed functional needs.
Step 4 — Comprehensive Written Report
A detailed Functional Capacity Assessment report is prepared, outlining assessment findings and relevant recommendations.
The report may include information about functional abilities, support requirements, assistive technology, therapy needs, environmental modifications and other relevant considerations.
The completed report can be shared with relevant parties, including NDIS representatives, support coordinators or treating professionals, with appropriate consent.
Our Approach to Functional Capacity Assessments
At The Therapy Room NQ, we believe a Functional Capacity Assessment should provide more than a list of difficulties.
Our assessments recognise each individual’s strengths, preferences, goals and lived experiences while developing a clear understanding of the challenges they encounter in everyday life.
We take a collaborative, person-centred approach, ensuring that recommendations are practical, relevant and supported by appropriate clinical evidence.
Our Occupational Therapists understand the importance of comprehensive documentation and aim to provide reports that clearly communicate functional support needs to families, support coordinators and other relevant professionals.
